Och, it's just a Red-billed Leiothrix

We had been seeing a flock of this little bird before we went on our trip, but couldn't get a photo, and couldn't even agree among ourselves on its description!  However, they were in the Kaki tree the other morning, and I managed to snap this one through the glass.

We failed to find any trace of it in our bird books or on the internet, surprising for such a striking bird.  However, all is now made clear - thanks, Colin, Beatrice and Dick.  Thanks Tim and Jenny.  It's a Pekin Robin, or, more correctly a Red-billed Leiothrix, and it shouldn't be here!  Its natural range is India, Bhutan, Nepal, Burma and Tibet, and it is seen as a bird of hill forests.  It's a popular cage bird apparently, but escapees have set up viable colonies in Europe - including one "near Lucca" which presumably is where ours have come from.

Peekin' at the red-billed leiothrix  ..
