To Florence for the opera

This week we went in to Florence to see a production of Verdi's Falstaff at their new opera house, less than a year old.  Apparently Florence hosted the first ever opera in 1598, but has never had an opera house.

Although the opera house is walkable from the centre, it is also on the tram line, which saved a bit of legwork.  We checked it out in daylight to avoid a chaotic search before the show began in the evening.

The verdict - the opera theatre was spectacular, and the show was really well done and rather good fun, and the plot not as complicated as we first thought - helped along by simultaneous subtitles ...

Barbara at the new opera house on the "dummy run"
Not Edinburgh.  A tram puffs round the bend ...
View of the duomo from the end of our street
Barbara outside the osteria where we had an excellent lunch
Clandestine view of a neighbour from our hotel window

Aperitivo at the prosciutteria before the show
The audience stream into the theatre ...
... and settle into the space age auditorium ...
