We had one more day in Ferrara, so it was time to mount our bikes and get going. In between cappuccinos, we managed to enjoy visits to the Palazzo Schifanoia museum (wonderful frescoes) Archaeological museum (Roman ships and Etruscan artworks from the lost city of Spina), the Castello Estense and the house of Ariosto (writer of Orlando Furioso.

| You would describe the Castello Estense as a fairytale castle if you didn't know of its grim history in medieval times ... |

Many pictures worth a comment: Bill caressing the marble head of David, the Etruscan woman with jewelry, the Duomo at night, the place where the Copernican revolution started, Barbara with ANOTHER YOUNG guest...We must go there soon ourselves, yes we must!
ReplyDeleteGood to know you are out and about cycling through such a landscape and thank you for bringing its layered history alive for us. Your blog is a wonderful window into a world that seems (and is) so far from Adelaide with its sprawling low density suburbs and parrots in the trees. The terrible history here is much more recent and dates to our ancestors and seems to me just as grim if not grimmer than anything in the Middle Ages.
ReplyDeleteWell - no kangaroos or opossums in Ferrara! However, we did enjoy our stay very much. Thanks for commenting - we know how busy you are at the moment!
DeleteSorry it has taken me do long to learn how to post a comment. I tried before by without success. I seem to have finally cracked it.
