Heading for the Alps

Woke to thick fog this morning, but this cleared patchily to give a sunny day.  We had a lot of coffee stops - these autoroutes are very soporific.  However, less soporific was an alert in the Mont Blanc tunnel.  Barriers came down all along the tunnel, and the tunnel radio station informed us that there was an obstacle in the roadway, and would we all please remain at a standstill.  Rapidly moving emergency vehicles added to the excitement.  However, after 10 minutes of slightly tense waiting, we were told to proceed, and soon passed a very slow moving truck on the other carriageway accompanied by a cluster of fire engines and police cars.  Phew!

Down in the valley, we booked into a hotel in the village of Saint Pierre, where all the street signs are in French, but the inhabitants speak Italian.  (and French, and English ...)
