San Cassiano and Limano

Today we headed down to the valley of the Lima river - a tributary of the River Serchio.  High above Bagni di Lucca on the valley floor, we visited villages we have only seen from a distance.  All are very "unspoilt" ancient settlements clinging to rocky slopes and ridges - an early builder's nightmare ...

The church in the village of San Cassino - dating from the 9th to 12th cent
Detail of doorway showing dancers(?) with flowers above a distinctly celtic-looking weave pattern
Fierce animals with big teeth encircle the happy humans
Onward and upward - the village of Limano basks in the sun ...
... and continues along the ridge behind me
The view to the west - the Serchio valley, and, not far beyond, the Mediterranean
This brilliant golden willow is not just for decoration - its thin twigs will be used as ties to tie up the grapevines seen behind. Limano peeps at us over the ridge.

  1. dear Barbara and Bill, you are increasing the radius of the explored territory. For us the valle della Lima is mainly unchartered territory, Watching your pictures of Limano and San Cassiano opens for us new perspectives.
