Shopping trip to Castelnuovo

Castelnuovo is our nearest biggish town, only about 15 minutes away.  It is a good deal smaller than Lucca, but bigger than Barga.  We needed to get a course book for our Italian lessons which we are taking at the secondary school here in Barga.  In the fifteenth century, the town was the base of the governor of the Garfagnana, one Ludovico Ariosto.  Ariosto was a poet and wrote the famous epic poem Orlando Furioso, describing the adventures of Charlemagne and others.  The town was much damaged by raids from the "Liberators" - bombers used to try and dislodge the German troops from their outposts on the Gothic line in 1945.

A grand sunset - they're getting later too!
